Joyful Brews
About Us
Serving Berthoud Since 1996
Welcome to Joyful Brews! We are a small, woman owned drive-thru coffee shop located in Berthoud, Colorado.

We serve handcrafted espresso drinks, a small assortment of locally baked goods, breakfast burritos, custom breakfast sandwiches, soft serve ice cream, and tons of non-coffee drink options too!

It is so incredibly important to us to go beyond what you order. We value building relationships and community in our shop, and we genuinely care deeply for each person that passes through. We are not your average drive thru coffee shop. We keep it small, and personal, and made with love. All are welcome at Joyful Brews!

Our Story
Joyful Brews was established in 1996 under the name Jo To Go by Peder Thorstensen and Tiffany Heywood. Peder had a dream of running a quick stop, drive thru coffee shop at a time where there was only one other known business of that type in the area. Tiffany was the mastermind and the implementer of that idea. We began in a small building across the street from our current location. That building is now located in Peder's backyard!

In 1998, we moved to our current location after very quickly outgrowing our little building. What became apparent was that a drive thru espresso shop was not a trend, and much needed in our community. We made it our mission to serve our community in the best ways we knew how to: by providing a friendly face, a kick ass cup of coffee, a few snacks and to make sure that we always gave back to our town.
Peder & Tiffany ran Jo To Go until 2001, when they decided to move out of state and sold to another local family. Jo To Go changed hands a few times before Tiffany made the decision to purchase the business back in 2008 on her own. At that time, her oldest daughter, Amanda, helped run the shop with her. Together, they grew the business back to its former glory and really injected themselves back into the community. Tiffany's other children, Alliy, Jon and Emily have all worked in the shop throughout the years. In 2016, Amanda made the decision to purchase Jo To Go from Tiffany and run it. She's kept her siblings on as staff, and has grown the team to 11 employees.

In 2019, we discovered that the trademark we had on the Jo To Go name had lapsed, and another company had trademarked it. They began to send us cease and desist letters in regards to using the name, forcing our hand. At that same time, we purchased and rebranded another cafe, called Kofe House. We decided to name both shops Kofe, until we sold Kofe House to another local family in 2021. They wanted to keep the name, so we once again renamed the drive thru, Joyful Brews. The name was inspired by Amanda's mother in law, named Joy, who passed away in 2021 and was a great inspiration to us and the importance of family & spreading Joy every day.

It's been an incredible journey to take this business on a multi-generational journey and to make it about so much more than a cup of coffee. We truly believe in fostering a community around the coffee. It's a morning ritual that we are honored to be a part of. So many in our community have watched us grow up and change, as we have with you, and we are honored to be a part of your life. Now, Amanda's daughter, Aspen, occasionally fills in at the shop during the summer: taking orders and washing dishes, just as her mom did as a kid.
But, even though so much has changed, so much has stayed the same! As always, we hire local artists to paint murals on our building every 4-5 years, our current artist is Joyanna Gittings!

It's incredibly important to financially support our town as well, which is why we donate to local sports teams, charities, the Berthoud Community Library District, and we sponsor teacher appreciation events, and make sure that our schools receive as much support as we are able to give. We also prioritize sourcing as many of our products as possible from Colorado, locally owned and women owned businesses.

As we approach 30 years in business, we hope to continue to serve the town of Berthoud and this community for many years to come!
