Joyful Brews was established in 1996 as Jo To Go by Peder Thorstensen and Tiffany Heywood. Peder dreamed of opening a quick-stop, drive-thru coffee shop at a time when there was only one other business like it in the area. Tiffany was the visionary who brought that dream to life. The original shop began in a small building across the street from our current location; so small, in fact, that it now lives in Peder’s backyard! By 1998, we had already outgrown that space and moved to our current location. It quickly became clear that drive-thru espresso wasn’t just a trend; it was something our community truly needed. From the start, our mission has been simple: serve our town with a friendly face, a kick-ass cup of coffee, a few good snacks, and a commitment to always give back. Peder and Tiffany ran Jo To Go until 2001, when they moved out of state and sold the business to another local family. Over the years, the shop changed hands a few times until Tiffany purchased it in 2008. At that time, her oldest daughter, Amanda, helped run the shop alongside her. Together, they rebuilt the business and re-immersed it in the community. Tiffany’s other children, Alliy, Jon, and Emily, have all worked in the shop throughout the years.​ In 2016, Amanda officially purchased Jo To Go from Tiffany and took over ownership. She kept her siblings on staff and grew the team to 11 employees, continuing the family-first legacy. In 2019, we learned that the trademark for the Jo To Go name had lapsed and been claimed by another company, forcing us to rebrand. Around the same time, we purchased and rebranded another café, Kofe House, and briefly named both shops Kofe. In 2021, we sold Kofe House to another local family who wished to keep the name, and once again renamed our drive-thru; this time to Joyful Brews. The name was inspired by Amanda’s mother-in-law, Joy, who passed away in 2021. She was a constant source of inspiration and embodied the importance of family, kindness, and spreading joy every single day. Today, Joyful Brews represents nearly 30 years of community, connection, and generations working side by side. Many of you have watched us grow up just as we’ve watched you, and that means everything to us. Giving back remains at the heart of who we are. We proudly support local sports teams, charities, the Berthoud Community Library District, teacher appreciation events, and our local schools. We also prioritize sourcing products from Colorado-based, locally owned, and women-owned businesses whenever possible. As we approach 30 years in business, we look forward to continuing to serve Berthoud and this incredible community for many years to come, with joy, heart, and great coffee.
